Ex- Flying Eagles Star Joins Scottish Champions

By Tolu Atobatele

Former Nigerian youth international Nnamdi Ofoborh has revealed his excitement at the prospects of teaming up with his compatriots at Scottish side Rangers who won the 2020/2021 Scottish Premiership League.

Ofoborh spent the second half of the last campaign on the books of Wycombe Wanderers on loan from Bournemouth, but the midfielder signed a four-year pre-contract agreement with Rangers in February.

While the 2018 Bournemouth U-21 Player of the Year was on the treatment table nursing his way back from an injury, Rangers were romping their way to a first league title in a decade.

Super Eagles stars Joe Aribo and Leon Balogun, as well as Nigeria eligible Calvin Bassey, were involved as Steven Gerrard’s men put together an incredible unbeaten run of matches to dethrone Celtics as the kings of Scotland.

The Premiership race promises to be an even exciting contest between the two Scottish rivals next term, and Ofoborh can’t wait to help the Gers outshine their eternal foes again.

“How excited am I about getting up there? On a scale of one to 10, I’m probably about a 12 right now!” Oforborh stated.

“I just want to get to Glasgow and get going. They are a massive club, one of the biggest out there. Everyone wants to play for the biggest clubs, and now I’m going to get that chance.

“I’m a winner, so I want to win trophies in my career. “I want to make the fans and my family proud by getting my hands on some silverware.

“They’ve won the title, but it will be our job to make sure we hold on to it and win again next season.”

Born in England to Nigerian parents, Ofoborh represented Nigeria at the U-20 level. The 21-year-old midfielder was part of the Flying Eagles squad to the Under-20 World Cup finals in Poland in 2019 and made three appearances in the tournament

KRC Genk Slammed A Hefty Fee On Onuachu

By Tolu Atobatele

Belgian club KRC Genk will allow Paul Onuachu to join another club this summer only if the potential suitor cough out at least N12.6 billion (€25 million) for the Nigerian goalpoacher.

After a stunning and brilliant campaign in which he found the back of the net 37 times in 44 matches across all competitions for club and country, Onuachu has become a sought after jewel across the major European leagues.

The Super Eagles striker has never hidden his preference for the English Premier League, where he adores Arsenal for their attacking philosophy.

But the Gunners, boasting the talents of French international Alexandre Lacazette and Gabonese forward Pierre Emerick Aubameyang, are not showing any interest in the former Midtjylland man.

Onuachu, though, is a man much wanted in Italy, Spain, and France, with Lazio and Olympique Lyonnais already credited with an interest in his services.

The Smurfs got Onuachu for only six million euros from Danish side FC Midtjylland two years ago

Genk are resigned to losing their star striker this summer but want to be well compensated for their troubles and have slammed a take-it-or-leave-it fee of 25 million euros on the 27-year-old

The Collapse of Guardiola’s Magic

By Tolu Atobatele

Expectations were high. Anticipations were rigorous. Permutations were easy. Soccer enthusiasts were easily predictable.

Everything concerning the Uefa Champions League were one way. All fingers pointed at one direction.

Low and behold it was the grand finale stage of the Uefa Champions League. Football followers all over the world were apprehensive. The common discuss at every mammoth gathering was the Champions League final. The tie had two English clubs Manchester City against Chelsea (with different football traditions and histories).

Manchester City were making its debut in the Final of the world most lucrative club football competition after several attempts failed in the past while Chelsea were making its third appearance in the final having featured in 2008 final against another of English club, Manchester United but lost on penalty shootout and featured also at the 2012 Final against Bayern Munich and this time around winning the trophy via penalty shootout for the first time in the club history.

For soccer buffs, the tie was a walk- over. The common belief amongst those entangled or carried away or lost in the soccer artistry of Manchester City was that history (2008 final ) will once again repeat itself as Chelsea were up against another club from Manchester.

To be or not to be was the weak faith of the few followers who believe in the ability of Chelsea due to their impressive and electrifying performance in their domestic league since Thomas Tuchel took over the reign from erstwhile coach Frank Lampard.

If not for anything they had managed a final berth again after having dislodge some of Europe football heavyweights like Athletico Madrid, Real Madrid and Porto at the round of 16, quarter final and semi final stages respectively.

If not for anything they were the only EPL team that surprised soccer followers with their performance in the competition.

Gamblers were not left out. The bet was easily on Manchester City. Only the die-hard Chelsea fans or gamblers who were not too sure of themselves stood by their darling team.

And so the die was cast. It was going to be another give away result as some believes Chelsea will once again confine Manchester City to the bin of defeat just as they did in EPL matches and FA cup game.

It was all about Guardiola’s magic. Little chance was given to Chelsea who apparently came fourth in EPL standing an d picked the last Uefa Champions League spot for next season.

After all the common predictions by some football pundits favored Manchester City going into the final game but football proved them all wrong. The thought were that Manchester City will walk past Chelsea easily and win the trophy for the first time. Not even at the wildest imagination of any enthusiast that the trophy will return to London after nine years of bringing the trophy to Stamford Bridge.

At certain quarters Manchester City were already being celebrated as winners of Uefa Champions League 2020/2021 season.

The world was waiting to see the best of football from these two teams. There was yet another classic game in the waiting, the importance of the Uefa Champions League final between Manchester City and Chelsea FC.

The final of it’s kind for the season 2020/2021 can not be over emphasized. It was meant to determine the winner of the 2020/2021 Uefa Champions League.

The Blues had every difficulty one could imagine in a football game particularly the way Manchester City plays yet they managed to get a goal through Kai Havertz who coolly beat Ederson before slotting the ball into the back of the net for the only goal of the pulsating encounter and Chelsea were crowned Champions of Europe for the second time.

Guardiola’ s magic yet again could not save his team from defeat at the hands of Chelsea who also conquered his Barcelona side on their way to winning the trophy in 2011/2012 season while his army were left pondering and asking themselves how they let slip off their hands the trophy they craves.

Eden Hazard Clears The Air On His Going Back To Chelsea This Summer

By Tolu Atobatele

Former Chelsea playmaker and Real Madrid star, Eden Hazard has come out to clear the air on speculations flying around that he’s set to return to Chelsea this summer after a not too impressive season at Real Madrid and has clearly ruled out any possibility of making a return to Chelsea this summer.

Reports in several Spanish newspapers had earlier claimed that the Belgian is looking to leave Real Madrid at the end of the season and his preferred destination is Stamford Bridge.

Hazard made the move to Real Madrid from Chelsea in a £130 million deal in 2019, but has not been able to replicate the performance that made Madrid splashed such huge amount of money on him whilst he is now seen as a flop and bad signing by many Real Madrid fans, having struggled to make an impact during his time in the Spanish capital.

The 30-year-old started just seven games and subbed on in as many games in La Liga this season spent the better part of the season on injury bed.

Reacting to the speculations, Hazard said he is determined to put behind him the disappointment of this season and work hard to improve on his performance and prove himself at Real Madrid.

“Everyone knows that my first two years were not good, so first I want to prove myself at Real Madrid. I will do everything to do that,” Hazard said at a Belgium press conference ahead of Euro 2020.

Hazard added: “I certainly don’t see myself leaving Madrid, given the contract situation.

“I know myself and I know when I am in shape. If that is the case, I can give it my all for Real next season. That is my plan.”

Nnosiri’s Solitary Goal Against Warri Wolves Gave Katsina United A Face Lift

By Tolu Atobatele

Katsina United were the better team yesterday returning to winning ways on NPFL Match Day 24 encounter with a 1-0 victory over Warri Wolves at Muhammadu Dikko Stadium.

Samuel Nnosiri 1st half strike was the tonic they needed to shake off the disappointment of the last outing against Adamawa United where the Changi boys were outdone by questionable calls by center referee Udeh Kingsley denying the team a legitimate penalty in the process, the Bishir Sadauki tutelage team made their intention of amassing the 3points known as they were fully in charge of proceedings against Warri Wolves from the blast of the whistle and were rewarded with a deservedly earned 3 points.

The victory came at the right time and has thus propelled Katsina United to 15th position with 25 points on the NPFL table albeit playing a game more than Wikki Tourist who occupies the 16th position with 24 points.

The next game will see Katsina United square up against Nasarawa United as they continue the battle for favourable results in their subsequent matches in their quest to stay clear of relegation zone and keep their slot in NPFL.

Udeh Kingsley’s Dubious Decision Cost Katsina United A Valuable In Yola

By Tolu Atobatele

The week 23 NPFL match played on Wednesday May 26 between Adamawa United and Katsina United at the Ribadu Square Stadium, Yola have been won and lost but the feel of injustice call by the center referee Udeh Kingsley will remain as fresh as dew in the heart of Katsina United faithfuls.

The keenly contested match had the Shingi boys trailing by a lone goal courtesy of own goal by Abdulmalik Sanusi but were determined to get back on level terms. It though the central referee Udeh Kingsley had another plan as he denied Katsina United what seems like a legitimate penalty.
The officiating referee, from Kwara State dubiously overlooked a penalty call when Adamawa United defender fouled a Katsina United forward Abdulwasiu Mahmud who was brought down in the box while heading towards goal to the dismay of Katsina United management who were hopeful of getting something out of the game possibly to take them off the relegation zone.

A quick exchange of passes between Nnosiri and Yusuf had Abdulwasiu through on the left flank with handful of Adamawa defenders to beat but was hacked down in the penalty area when an Adamawa United player tuck his leg between Wasiu’s legs thus sending him to the ground. After hesitating momentarily, the center referee decided otherwise and waved goal kick.

Replay of the incident showed there was a foul on Wasiu in the box, a scene that plays out in just about every football match in the NPFL most especially when Katsina United plays yet hardly ever produces a whistle for such a transgression.

Katsina United sits in 17th position on the log with 22points after 23 round of matches with high hope of surviving the drop but this monetary goofed by the central referee cost the team a potential valuable point on the road and deepen them in relegation battle zone.
