A Dubious Decision Too Many Against Katsina United

A Katsina United brought down in the box

By Tolu Atobatele

Accusations of favoritism and dubious calls have been a staple of Nigeria local league (NPFL) for years, even the body saddle with the responsibility of making the field a level playing grounds for every participating teams in the topflight league are no saints themselves as far as favoritism is concern while winning at all cost mentality can not be overemphasised with few of the government owned teams long considered the beneficiaries of controversial decisions made by match officials.

The week 23 NPFL match played on Wednesday May 26 between Adamawa United and Katsina United at the Ribadu Square Stadium, Yola will do nothing to quell that talk. If anything, it will only increase it after the officiating referee dubiously overlooked a penalty call when Adamawa United defender fouled a Katsina United forward Wasiu who was brought down in the box while heading towards goal to the dismay of Katsina United management who were hopeful of getting something out of the game possibly to take them off the relegation zone, but that hope was dashed and quenched by the center referee who stood his ground despite his poor handling of the game.

A good and quick exchange of passes by Katsina United who were trailing the game by a lone goal after Abdulmalik Sanusi had scored an own goal in 57 minutes of play released and put Wasiu on course for an equaliser but was hacked down in the penalty area when an Adamawa United player tuck his leg between Wasiu’s legs thus sending him to the ground. After hesitating momentarily, the center referee decided otherwise and wave goal kick.

Replay of the incident showed there was a foul on Wasiu in the box, a scene that plays out in just about every football match in the NPFL most especially when Katsina United plays yet hardly ever produces a whistle for such a transgression.

This all came on the heels of a second half controversial decisions by the referee but incredibly he allowed the game to continue despite calls from Katsina United boys for a penalty.

Katsina United sits in 17th position on the log with 22points after 23 round of matches with high hope of surviving the drop but what they’re getting in terms of officiating is nothing but terrible. I am not surprise though because its is not the first time that Katsina United will be subjected to such ill treatment by match officials and even the league organizers with no one having a clear picture of their intent. It remains to be seen if there will be any further dubious calls against Katsina United who are fighting very hard to avoid the drop to the lower league.

Many incidents in past matches has proved that maybe match officials or some administrators are wishing the club (Katsina United) get relegated if not we will keep asking same question all day with no answer to defend it but for now the conspiracy theories of referees favoring some teams over others will continue to rage on and brings the local league into disrepute the more.

Bringing The Past Into Present: Baby Eagles Rule The World In China

By Tolu Atoba

The only language the world understands is football. Nothing brings people of diverse culture and religion together except football. The game of football in Nigeria has become both culture and religion hence Nigerians forget their differences, tribes, political affiliations and comes together as one to support their team whenever they’re on national assignment.

The exploits of Nigeria U-16 team (Baby Eagles) now Golden Eaglets at the inaugural edition of FIFA Kodak/JVC U16 World Championship ( now U-17 World Cup) in China 1985 sent a strong footballing message to the rest of the world thus the global village shifted and focused their attention to the most populous black nation on earth and Nigeria have not disappoint at the cadet world cup.

In this article, Sport Angle International brings the past into present by taking a look at the performance of the then Baby Eagles led by a young and talented  Nduka Ugbade alongside the likes of Jonathan Akpoborie, Binebi Numa, Baba Otu Mihammed, Victor Igbinoba, Segun Fetuga, Fatai Atere and host of others who held the football world spellbound with their display and strength.

The Baby Eagles were a delight  to watch with skills, flair and a willingness to attack were the three main ingredients in Nigeria’s first world title at U-16 level. The team proved their superiority in just about all facets of the game. The world Golden Eaglets coasted through the first round with a 1-0 victory over Italy, a comprehensive 3-0 win against Costa Rica and a draw with Saudi Arabia meant the Eaglets announced their presence to the world. In the quarter final game against Hungary the Eaglets  stepped up and brush them aside winning 3-1. The Eaglets came up against their West African fellow Guinea in the semi final match but find their hurdle a bit tough to subdue in regulation time and had to scraped through on penalties 4-2 while in the final game played at the workers stadium in Beijing on August 11, 1985 the Eaglets triumphed over West Germany 2-0 to cart home the trophy at the maiden edition of Fifa U16 world cup thus Nigeria becomes the first African/Black nation to win a FIFA World Cup at any level.

This was a very well-balanced tournament but the Eaglets just made it their show with flair and attacking instincts the world will ever lives to remember.

Villarreal suffer big blow as key player is ruled out of Europa League final vs Manchester United

Villarreal club football manager Unai Emery has confirmed that Samuel Chukwueze will not be involve in tonight’s Europa League final against Manchester United at the Gdansk Stadium in Poland.

This remains the most unpleasant news to the club and their fans as Chukwueze will not play a part when the Yellow Submarine file out against the Red Devils at Gdansk Stadium in Poland.

Chuwkueze was amongst the traveling party to Poland for the final but did not pass the fitness test conducted twenty-four hours before the final which automatically rule him out of the tie.

The Nigerian International who has been on the sideline since sustaining an injury to the rectus anterior during the first half of the goalless draw against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium missed four consecutive matches for the Yellow Submarine against Celta de Vigo, Real Valladolid, Sevilla and Real Madrid in the Spanish La Liga Santander.

Just couple of days ago, the Nigeria Football Federation had to excused him from the 24man players for next week Friday international friendly against Cameroon in Austria.

Addressing journalists at the pre-match press conference, Emery said : “Samu has not been able to recover in time from the injury, but Foyth is fully available”.

The 22-year-old Chukwueze had a separate training session as he was not involved in Tuesday evening full training with the rest of his teammates.
